According to Ayurveda, this time of year is governed by the Pitta dosha, which embodies the elements of fire and water, manifesting as heat, intensity, and transformation. To maintain harmony and balance during this fiery season, it’s essential to adopt cooling, soothing, and nurturing practices. Here are some Ayurvedic practices to help you stay balanced and energized throughout June.

  1. Choose “cooling” foods in your diet. Natural foods have either a cooling or heating effect on your digestion. In summer, Nature provides foods that will be more cooling for your digestive fire, such as watermelon, cucumber, and herbs like mint and fennel.
  2. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and cool. My personal favorite is coconut water — look for brands with NO added sugar (you’d be surprised how many of the big name brands add it!).
  3. Stay aligned to Nature’s rhythm. This is a perfect time of year to re-calibrate your circadian clock. Get up early and get some of that early morning Vitamin D. Go outside! Take a walk, meditate, or just sip on your morning caffeine (remember, last caffeine intake should be 12 hours before bedtime).
  4. Choose cooling oils for your self-massage. Coconut oil and sunflower oil are good choices to keep your skin hydrated and cool, especially with more sun exposure! You can follow this practice with a cool shower using rose, lavender, or sandalwood essential oil.
  5. Dress cool. Choose light, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen in soothing colors such as white, blue, and green.
  6. Cultivate inner calm. The intensity of Pitta can sometimes lead to irritability and impatience. Mindfulness practices such as meditation, forest bathing, and mantras can help maintain inner peace.
  7. Finally, prioritize restful nights. Quality sleep is crucial for maintaining balance during the summer. Make sure your bedroom is cool and well-ventilated. Drink a calming herbal tea like chamomile or lavender before bed.
