Another reason we love summer is VACATION! At least for some of us, that is. And if you’re like me, you use your vacation time to get away, to travel, to explore a new place and experience new things. Vacation can be, and should be, an important part of self-care; a time to disconnect, unplug, and reset the mind. It can be a time of self-reflection, a time of going back to what’s important to you: family, fun, and freedom. However, it can also disrupt our daily routines, leading to imbalances in our physical and mental well-being. Staying aligned with the Ayurvedic clock during your vacation can help you maintain balance and enjoy your time off without compromising your health. Here are some tips to help you stay on track while enjoying your vacation.

Following the Ayurvedic schedule is important because it aligns our daily routines with the natural rhythms of the body and the environment, promoting optimal health and balance. Each period of the day is governed by a specific dosha—Vata, Pitta, or Kapha—each influencing various physiological functions. By adhering to these timeframes, we can harmonize our activities, such as eating, sleeping, and exercising, with the body’s natural cycles. This alignment helps improve digestion, enhance energy levels, support mental clarity, and ensure better overall well-being. Additionally, it keeps us grounded by fostering a sense of routine and stability, helping us stay connected to the natural world and our own bodily rhythms, which can reduce stress and promote a more centered, mindful approach to daily life.

So how can we stay aligned to this rhythm while we’re on vacation, away from our routine, and away from the things that make self-care easier? While it’s important to try and stick to the Ayurvedic clock, it’s equally essential to be flexible and enjoy your vacation. The key is to balance indulgence with mindfulness. Most importantly, pay attention to how your body feels throughout the day. If you feel tired, take a break, even if it’s during an active period. If you feel energetic, make the most of it. Your body’s signals are a powerful guide for maintaining balance.

If you find yourself in a different time zone or engaging in late-night activities, adapt your Ayurvedic routine accordingly. For instance, if you sleep later, shift your meal and activity times to align with your new schedule, ensuring you still follow the doshic times as closely as possible. When indulging in local cuisines, do so mindfully. Savor each bite, eat slowly, and stop when you’re satisfied. Mindful eating helps you enjoy your meals without overloading your digestion, even if the foods are different from your usual diet.

Vacations can sometimes be hectic with travel and sightseeing. Incorporate relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or gentle yoga into your daily routine. These practices can help you stay grounded and balanced amidst the excitement. Ensure that your vacation itinerary includes a mix of active and restful activities. After a day of exploring, allow yourself some downtime to relax and recharge. This balance will help you maintain your energy levels and prevent burnout.

Spend time in nature to realign with the natural rhythms around you. Whether it’s a walk on the beach, a hike in the mountains, or simply sitting in a park, nature can help restore balance and enhance your well-being. Most importantly, remember that it’s okay if you can’t stick to your Ayurvedic routine perfectly while on vacation. The goal is to enjoy your time off and create memorable experiences. Be kind to yourself and embrace any deviations with a positive mindset.

Whether it’s a travelling vacation or a “stay-cation”, it can be a great time to reconnect with creative activities such as writing, photography, or sketching/drawing. Creativity is a great antidote to stress, and you’ll come back feeling motivated and ready to conquer your daily routine!

Tell me, what’s your vacation plan this summer? Are you travelling somewhere fun? Or are you staying home and enjoying some down time? I’d love to know how I can support you stay on track with your wellness goals!
